FLORENCE, SC —

Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum called for joint a U.S./Israeli military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities to prevent the Middle Eastern nation from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

The GOP presidential hopeful spoke during a campaign event at Poynor Adult/Community Education Center in Florence on Friday, saying the ramification of launching such a strike would be less significant than the possibly of facing a nuclear Iran.

“Either we’re going to stop them and take the consequences of having stopped them, which is short term, or take the long term consequences of having a nuclear Iran trying to wipe out the state of Israel,” Santorum said.

The Pennsylvania senator said allowing Iran to develop its nuclear capabilities runs the risk of an arms race with Saudi Arabi and Turkey, as well as increasing the threat of terrorist attacks in the U.S. and around the world.

“We’ll see the world beginning to blow up like a tinder box,” he said.

Santorum’s comments come on the heels of a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) earlier this week that included evidence the agency says proves the Islamic republic is working toward obtaining nuclear weapons.

The IAEA continued to make its case against Iran during a presentation to 35 nations Friday, during which the agency shared satellite images, letters and diagrams supporting its earlier findings, according to a report from the Associated Press.

Iran’s chief envoy told reporters the information presented was fabricated by the U.S. and its allies and denied that the country is developing nuclear weapons.

Santorum said a strike against Iran would be welcomed by neighboring countries, saying that while there would most likely be unrest in some parts of the Middle East, governments in the region would be grateful to the U.S. for neutralizing the Iranian threat.

“I’m sure there would be a lot of heat in the streets,” he said. “There’d be a lot of applause and signs of relief in the halls of government in just about every Arab country. There’s no question that most of the Arad world does not want to see Iran with a nuclear weapon.”

The senator accused the Obama administration of being weak on Iran, criticizing the president for his response to the Iranian led plot to assassinate a Saudi ambassador during a trip the New York earlier this year.

Santorum said the president’s weak stance has been motivated by his ongoing re-election efforts.
