On December 6th, the Iranian government and Revolutionary Guard began deploying forces on the belief that an attack by the West, Israel, or another coalition is imminent.  In response to these moves, Iranian citizens are beginning to pull their money out of banks, and stockpiling supplies in lieu of the increased threat of war.

“Many foreigners are leaving Iran … I suspect that there will be military action … we will become another Iraq,” said architect Mahsa Sedri, 35. “Obviously something is going on … otherwise the foreigners would not leave Iran.”

A war, or even a tactical strike on Iranian targets or nuclear facilities could have devastating consequences to Europe, Japan, and even the United States as the potential for a new oil crisis would increase drastically.  Simple projections show that the price of crude could skyrocket to $250 a barrel overnight, with a complete shutdown if the Straits of Hormuz are blocked.  These disruptions in oil delivery would also matriculate into food costs and other industries that require large amounts of energy.

Perhaps this is why Americans are also focussing on Disaster Preparedness, and an increase in gun purchases since Black Friday.  Besides war with Iran, there is an overall growing sense of a systematic breakdown in the global economic system, and Americans are preparing for a different type of crisis than the Iranians.

Actions today by the Iranian government and Iranian peoples show a growing tension that an attack, or outright war in the Middle East is imminent.  Bank runs by government employees, coupled with a growing stockpiling of food are sure signs that the citizenry is preparing for a long term campaign, not simply a tactical strike on nuclear targets.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has been alerted amid the international community’s efforts to bring more pressure to bear on Iran.  The Iranian leadership fears that the country may come under a coordinated attack by western countries, to eliminate the key elements of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Meanwhile Western countries are toughening economic sanctions against Iran up to the ban on the import of Iranian oil.

Chief Commander of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps general Muhammad Ali Jafari has ordered to disperse Iranian ballistic missiles across the country to protect them from enemy attacks. Several quick reaction units have been formed within the national air forces. Now they are conducting drills practicing quick counter attacks against the aviation of an imaginary enemy.

The recent weeks saw series of powerful blasts in Iran.

On November 12, an explosion in the research center in Teheran killed General Hassan Tehrani Moqaddam, who was described as the chief of Iran’s ballistic missile program.

On November 28, another powerful blast went off in the city of Isfahan. According to some reports, the blasts damaged a local uranium-enrichment plant. Several days ago it was reported that Iranian anti missile forces shot down a US RQ-170 Sentinel drone, used for air intelligence. Experts don’t rule out that a similar drone could have attack the research center near Teheran three weeks earlier. The thought, which comes to mind, is that a real secret war against the Islamic Republic is going on.

In November passions began to rise around Teheran and its nuclear program after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had published a report claiming that Teheran was close to the creation of a nuclear bomb. Western politicians began to talk about imposing tougher economic sanctions against Teheran and possible strike on Iranian nuclear facilities in particular by Israel forces. Back then the experts of the Voice of Russia assumed that Washington could be behind the “brain” behind all this process. However the White House now prefers to stay away and to solve the Iranian problem with the help of Israel.

According to Boris Dolgov, an expert in oriental studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences Anyway, all the talks about possible attacks on Iranian facilities are rather an information pressure than a preparation to concrete actions:

“It is unlikely that Israel will dare to carry out such strikes independently. Moreover, this will lead to a counterstrike of Iran, considering military potential of that country.  As for coalition with the US and the UK  I don’t think that this is possible now. The situation in those countries is not favorable for launching another military campaign.”

Indeed Israel does not hurry to escalate the conflict. Iranian ballistic missile are the key deterrents.

Statements made by some experts that Western special service are behind the disasters on Iranian facilities may also be attributed to informational pressure analyst with the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry Andrei Volodin said in an interview with the Voice of Russia:

“If blasts were the result of diversions the question than the obvious question what the purpose of these diversion was. Do they want to shake  the regime of Ahmadinejad? But in Iranian society people always get together against the danger from outside despite all domestic disagreements. The Western pressure has only made the trend of “nuclear nationalism” in Iran stronger. If Western services are behind terrorist attacks in Iran, than I don’t understand the logic of it.”

Whatever it is but the economic pressure on Iran will definitely get tougher. New sanctions will be added to the UN sanctions, unilateral sanctions of the US and the EU. According to the experts with the European Commission, this policy would be especially efficient if the US and Russia joined it. As for Washington it won’t take long to join but Moscow is convinced that new bans and sanctions will only make the situation in the region tenser.

Windows at the German school nearby were shattered in the attack, but the British school escaped the worst of the chaos after teachers sent pupils home early.

The schools have remained shut since, forcing hundreds of children to stay home. Foreign teachers and their families have left Iran, parents were told, though the French school hopes to resume lessons on Sunday, and Britain’s in the New Year.

Washington and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iranian nuclear facilities should diplomacy fail to resolve the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program, a position that has only hardened since the critical report by the International Atomic Energy Agency last month.
